Steerpike is a 17-year-old kitchen boy in the Great Kitchen of Gormenghast Castle, under the rule of Abiatha Swelter the chef. An intelligent young man, he longs to be free of the confines of the Kitchen and wants to be something more than what the traditions and rules of Gormenghast have held him tied to. Despite being constantly surrounded by other people in the Kitchen, Steerpike is somewhat lonely and isolated and so far he has spent most of his life trying to avoid beatings and the attention of Swelter to little success and has little to no hope of ever leaving or being able to escape.

That is not to say, though, that he will not take the opportunity should it present itself.
